Exploring Long Term Yo Yo Dieting

Letter of Informed Consent

I___________________________________________________consent to taking part in the above study.

The purpose of the research is to understand better long term “Yo Yo Dieting”.  From clearer knowledge about why so many people put themselves through multiple dieting cycles, it may be possible to help the development of moves towards healthier and less stressful eating habits.

The research will involve building up an honest and open relationship with researcher Malcolm Evans over a period of approximately 6 months. I understand that we will have a number of conversations together, up to a maximum of 12 sessions. These interviews will be recorded and later transcribed for analytical use.

I will not be named or otherwise identified in any written material, although quotations from interviews may be used.

I am aware that these sessions will entail detailed discussions and the general topics we will be exploring together include:

What is the history of your dieting behaviour?

Why do you think you diet?

How important for you is it that you diet?

How do you feel when you are not on a diet?

How do you think the process of dieting relates to who you are and how you feel about yourself?

Where do the main motivations for repeated dieting come from?

What would happen if you never dieted again?

What is the involvement in dieting of your acquaintances, friends and family?

I understand that the relationship between the researcher and myself is of a general research nature and should not be considered as counselling or therapy.

I am aware that I can withdraw at any time and that the data collected up to that time will be withdrawn if I do not want it to be used.
